Why Your Child's Handwriting Gets Worse in Class 4 — And What to Do
By Komal S. Harchandani · 6 min read · Last updated 2026-07-02
QUICK ANSWER
In Class 4 the volume of writing doubles. Kids who never mastered grip and letter formation compensate by writing faster and messier. Fix grip first, then run 10 minutes of daily copy work at deliberate speed — visible change in 6 weeks.
What changes in Class 4
Answers get longer, notebooks pile up, and tests demand paragraph answers instead of one-liners. Any weakness in Class 1–3 handwriting now shows.
The parent's 6-week plan
- Weeks 1–2: Grip check. Replace triangular pencil if grip is fisted.
- Weeks 3–4: Isolated letter drills — 5 letters a day, 20 reps each.
- Weeks 5–6: Copy work — 1 paragraph a day, timed.
What NOT to do
- Do not shout at the child while they write — it locks the wrist.
- Do not buy a "handwriting book" and leave them alone with it.
- Do not compare with siblings.

FAQ
At what age should I worry about my child's handwriting?
By Class 3. Earlier than that, motor skills are still developing.
Is dysgraphia common in India?
It is underdiagnosed. If your child's handwriting is illegible even when they try slowly, get a paediatric OT assessment.
Are handwriting classes worth it?
Yes, if the class isolates grip, letter shape and pace. Generic 'copy this book' classes are not.
