Calligraphy for Absolute Beginners — Start With ₹100 of Supplies

By Komal S. Harchandani · 5 min read · Last updated 2026-07-02

QUICK ANSWER

You can start modern calligraphy for under ₹100 with one Pilot V7, one Camlin brush pen and a plain A4 practice sheet. Add faux calligraphy drills for the first week — no special nibs needed.

Your ₹100 starter kit

  • Pilot V7 or Uniball Eye pen — ₹60
  • Camlin dual-tip brush pen (fine + brush) — ₹30
  • Plain A4 unruled sheets — ₹10

Week 1 drills

  1. Faux calligraphy. Write any word in your normal handwriting, then thicken every downstroke.
  2. Pressure control. Thin on the way up, thick on the way down. Do this on the letters i, l, u, n, m.
  3. Full alphabet — lowercase only.

Why not buy a nib and holder yet?

Most beginners waste ₹800 on a Nikko G + oblique holder, get frustrated in Week 1, and quit. Learn pressure first with a brush pen. Nibs come in Week 3.

With 20 minutes of daily practice, most students post-worthy work by week 4.

Do I need to know cursive first?

No. Modern calligraphy uses connected letters but does not require formal cursive training.
